Ala-Eh Festival: Batangas’ Most Grandiose Celebration

Every year beginning in 2011, Batangas celebrates what is considered as the mother of all its festivals, The “Ala-Eh” Festival. Touted as the most colorful and liveliest of all its celebrations, the festival commemorates the founding of Batangas and is slated during the first week of December annually.

The weeklong festivity usually starts on the 1st and culminates on the 8th of December. All 32 towns and 3 cities bid for the hosting and get the chance to present itself to its province mates and tourist- both Filipinos and foreigners alike. Once designated, the cities and municipalities of Batangas then proceed to the festival’s host to participate in the activities. For this year’s edition, the host of the festival remains to be announced.

Merriments at the Ala-eh Festival include province-wide beauty pageants, film screenings, photo exhibits, dog shows, and a culminating float parade and street dance competition which is normally done on the 8th of December. Sometimes, a parole-making contest and a Christmas tree lighting ceremony is held to accentuate the upcoming holiday season. There’s also a week-long trade fair participated in by local entrepreneurs which seek to highlight the culture and products of the province.

While the festival activities and objectives aim to lure visitors and increase appreciation for the culture of the region, it also desires to promote the natural beauty of the province in general. This includes the numerous beaches, the waterfalls, Taal Volcano, and many other spots that can be found in Batangas. Several other places of interest are highlighted, from churches to monuments, to historical shrines and specialty restaurants. But if you’re considering a beach getaway to experience what Batangas has to offer, look no further than planning on a trip in one of the province’s most promising beach destinations, Calatagan.
