Panglao, BOHOL – The first “eco-airport” in the country, Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA), has been officially inaugurated last November 27. The event was led by President Rodrigo Duterte together with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
This multi-billion air transport project was funded to address the growing traffic congestion, serve the growing number of local and foreign tourists, and eventually make Bohol more accessible to the world.
First environment-friendly airport
Located on Panglao Island in Bohol province, this promising aviation infrastructure is hailed as the “Green Gateway to the World” because of its environmentally sustainable structures and green technology that commit to the highest international standards.
The new airport touts its environment-friendly equipment and cutting-edge facilities: natural ventilation, efficient sewerage disposal system, rainwater catchment pond, and solar power system that covers around 30% of the airport’s total energy consumption.
A bigger upgrade from the Tagbilaran Airport
BPIA replaced the Tagbilaran Airport which closed its operations on the day of the inauguration. Sitting on a 220-hectare site on Panglao Island and is 10 times bigger than the old airport, BPIA can accommodate larger jets like Airbus 330s and Boeing 777s.
The new airport can also hold up to 2 million passengers yearly; more than double the 800,000 annual capacity of the decommissioned Tagbilaran airport. On peak hours, BPIA can accommodate 650 passengers.
Experience the enthralling charm of Panglao
40 minutes away from Tagbilaran City, BPIA will serve as a fresh gateway to Central Visayas getaways. Achieving fame from its magnificent beaches and diving spots, the Central Visayas region is now among the rising holiday destinations in the Philippines. It’s only a matter of time that it ascends to the country’s top tourist locations. Travelers and holiday-makers would then have the chance to experience the beauty of Panglao Island all the more.
